made this 8 x 10 gouache painting for my baby nephew-to-be who's due next year, the year of the rabbit. the block letters are his parents initials. i wish i took better pics of it, although the second photo's colors are a better representation of the real thing.

but it's still my favorite. makes me feel energetic and excited about possibilities. with the only things to worry about being what lines i'm interested in using, where and how. carving shapes and developing tones on paper with a stick of charcoal. love it. i'm looking forward to keeping up with it and seeing some of what i used to do come back to me.

here's that painting i started a while ago. i tend to rush things, so i ended up going over it again and again fixing bad choices. that's my lesson, to slow down, look at what i'm doing, and make better decisions. but i think it turned out ok. on to the next one.

i have to show off my new giant table my wife bought me. from eddie bauer. yes, eddie bauer. 70 bucks at a close out sale. it used to display sweaters. it's the perfect height for working at standing up. i covered a part of it with liquid proof tarp for my mixing station. the painting is coming along, by the way. i was frustrated, so i'm working on it upside down now. it helps actually.

haven't done one in a very long time. so bear with me please. this will be my experiment to see how out of practice i am. i'm determined to take it as far as i can in terms of finished-ness, since i have a tendency to quit too soon.

first i did a couple studies to warm up. this was my favorite.

close up. biggest challenge for me: maintaining the spontaneity and life of a sketch but working through it until it's finished. or at least better.

i felt compelled to draw underneath the painting for structural guidance. but already it's not nearly as magical as the first sketch. i've got a lot of work ahead of me. but i'm excited.

so i found this program, colors. it's great. it's still simple and doesn't have too many functions (like undo-but there's a way around it with the playback feature), but it turns your nintendo ds into a little digital sketchbook. thanks to my girlfriend for buying me the necessary cards and setting it up for me!
